I know that when people like us talk to others about the possibilities of having totally GREEN cities many of us are faced with people who don’t believe that it can be done. They argue that it’s too expensive, the technology is not there yet, or it’s just a science-fiction pipe dream. I am here to tell you it’s none of those things. It is possible, the technology is here, and yes, it is a little more expensive but the savings in the end will make up for it.
Traditional Looks But Green Certified!!
Case and point – Masdar City in the United Arab Emirates. It’s a new city that is being build right now just outside of Abu Dhabi and they are starting from the ground up and making every bit of it 100% green, efficient, and LEEDS certified. What also makes this city very intriguing to me is the fact that it is being built in the most oil-rich country in the world. For all arguments sake they don’t have to be doing this…but they are!!
I think the fact that this is being done is a great example to all that there is a need for this. If the most oil-rich country in the world sees value in building a green city then I think everyone else needs to take pause and ask ‘why aren’t we all doing this?’ My guess is that this country has opened their eyes to the fact that oil is a non-renewable energy source and one day there will be no more (that’s a fact) and they are future pacing to make sure they won’t be caught off guard when that happens. This is something that I think all of us need to be looking at.
Masdar City Transport! Very Sci-Fi but very real!
My purpose of this blog post was not to say the rest of us suck but to show everyone that even though there are many neigh-sayers who think that global warming is a joke there are also people out there that are taking it seriously and showing the rest of the world that it can be and should be done. We can turn all this global warming and stripping of natural resources around. We all just have to make it a priority and continue to make the population aware of the possibilities that are currently out there.
What can you do to push for greener cities? First of all, you can share this blog post with as many people as you can. Only when we show people what is possible will they finally realize it’s real. Some people need a little convincing. Maybe this is the thing that does it for them.
